Ajax defender Youri Baas has played down speculation linking him with Barcelona, saying he has received no indication that the Catalan club are pursuing him. The 23-year-old was named by Catalan newspaper Sport earlier this week as a possible defensive addition for Barça.
Baas addressed the report during Ajax’s post-match press conference in Herning, following their away win over FC Midtjylland. He acknowledged that he had seen the story but said he did not know where it had originated. “I haven’t heard anything myself,” Baas said, as quoted by Voetbalzone.
Although surprised by the link, the left-footed defender welcomed the attention and described it as a significant compliment, calling Barcelona the biggest club in the world. His comments nevertheless offered no suggestion that talks or contact have taken place, leaving the potential move firmly in the realm of speculation.
Baas remains under contract with Ajax until the middle of 2028 and has made 107 official appearances for the Amsterdam club. Voetbalzone also reports that he came close to joining FC Porto last summer before that proposed transfer fell through at the final stage.
