Youri Baas’ position at Ajax has become the subject of transfer speculation after he failed to play in the club’s opening competitive fixtures of the new season. The centre-back spent the full 90 minutes on the bench in each game, although his absence from the first meeting with Vojvodina was related to his fitness.
Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez has preferred Daley Blind and Aaron Bouwman in central defence during the Conference League qualifiers. Baas had been an important figure in recent seasons, but the current selection suggests he could begin the campaign outside the first-choice line-up. Noa Vahle expressed surprise at the situation on De Oranjezomer, telling FCUpdate that Baas appeared to be “the victim of the situation” following Blind’s arrival on the left side of defence.
ESPN analysts Anco Jansen and Marciano Vink have floated PSV as a possible destination, arguing that Baas’ ability on the ball would suit the Eindhoven club.
