Yegoian inspires Excelsior to emphatic win at Willem II
The winger created the early opener before completing a 3-0 Eredivisie victory, leaving the promoted hosts without a win this season.
Excelsior claimed a convincing 3-0 Eredivisie victory away to Willem II on Saturday evening, with Irakli Yegoian playing a decisive role in two goals. The result left the Tilburg side still searching for their first league win of the season.
The visitors needed only eight minutes to open the scoring. Yegoian delivered from the left and David Garden converted his cross. Willem II almost responded when Devin Haen’s effort struck the crossbar via Eric da Silva Moreira, although the flag was also raised for offside.
Excelsior doubled their advantage shortly after the half-hour mark. Rick Meissen headed in from a corner, continuing the Rotterdam club’s productive start to the season from set pieces. Willem II offered little in response before the interval.
Head coach John Stegeman introduced Tonny Vilhena for his Willem II debut at the start of the second half, while Manchester United loanee Chido Obi also made his first appearance for the club with around 15 minutes remaining. Neither could change the outcome. After a long clearance from goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel, Yegoian produced an individual run and fired into the near corner to complete the scoring. Willem II remain on one point after four matches, while Excelsior moved to nine points from four games.
