West Ham hand Joel Piroe No 9 shirt after striker’s arrival

West Ham United have unveiled Joel Piroe as their new No 9, adding a proven Championship goalscorer to a squad aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League. The London club were relegated after finishing 18th in the top flight last season.
Piroe arrives with a record of 73 goals in 179 Championship appearances. West Ham introduced the 27-year-old striker through a video in which a prominent supporter explained the club’s significance to him.
The Dutch forward said he believes his experience can help West Ham achieve their objectives. “I see West Ham as a club that belongs in the Premier League,” Piroe said, as quoted by VI. His new shirt number underlines the central role he is expected to occupy in the club’s attacking plans.
Piroe is the second Dutch player named Joël to join West Ham’s squad. The club also signed Joël Veltman on a free transfer at the start of August. West Ham created further room among their forwards on Tuesday by allowing Niclas Füllkrug to leave for Werder Bremen on loan.
