Vitesse goalkeeper Van den Berg handed ban after RKC red card
The Arnhem side will be without their goalkeeper for two matches after he accepted a three-game suspension, with one fixture conditional.
Vitesse goalkeeper Van den Berg has accepted a three-match suspension, one of which is conditional, following his late red card against RKC Waalwijk. The punishment means he will miss the away fixture against Jong FC Utrecht and the subsequent home game against Almere City.
Van den Berg was dismissed in the 83rd minute after making contact with Nazjir Held’s throat with his elbow. Vitesse had been on course for victory after Naoufal Bannis put them in front, but the sending-off left the Arnhem side to defend their lead with ten players during the closing stages.
RKC took advantage late on, with Finn Stokkers converting a penalty to deny Vitesse the win. Speaking to De Gelderlander, in comments reported by VI, Van den Berg described his action as “really stupid”. He said he had intended to push Held away rather than elbow him, while acknowledging that the contact justified the referee’s decision and that he should not have become involved in the first place.
The goalkeeper subsequently accepted the proposed disciplinary settlement. He will therefore be unavailable for Vitesse’s next two matches, while the third game of the sanction remains suspended on a conditional basis.
