Robin Veldman believes AZ should be considered title contenders after their flawless start to the season. The Alkmaar side have collected 12 points from four matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding only three ahead of their visit to Heerenveen.

Asked about AZ’s prospects, Veldman gave VI an immediate “Yes,” adding that they are title candidates if they maintain their current level. He also praised the work of former Heerenveen player Leeroy Echteld, highlighting AZ’s style of play, energy and willingness to give young players opportunities.

However, the Heerenveen coach insisted that his admiration does not amount to fear. Rather than approaching the fixture cautiously because of AZ’s form, he views it as a chance for his team to produce a positive response following matches against PEC Zwolle and Willem II. Heerenveen won the corresponding home fixture last season, when Maarten Martens was still in charge of AZ.

Veldman will have two new attacking options available. Winger Marko Farji and striker Roberts Uldrikis are set to be included in a Heerenveen matchday squad for the first time. The game comes too soon for defender Mees Hilgers, while the injured Marcus Linday and Mats Egbring will also be unavailable.
