Van der Gijp criticises Berghuis miss after Ajax lose to PSV
The analyst was surprised by Steven Berghuis’s failure to convert a first-half opportunity, while Valentijn Driessen questioned several of Ajax coach Míchel’s decisions.
René van der Gijp has expressed his disappointment over Steven Berghuis’s costly miss during Ajax’s 3-1 home defeat by PSV. The winger put a close-range opportunity wide in the 30th minute, when the score was 1-1.
Speaking on Vandaag Inside, Van der Gijp said he had expected a player with Berghuis’s left-footed technique to finish the chance. “Come on, man!” he said, as quoted by Voetbalzone, while arguing that the experienced attacker would normally be highly reliable from the penalty spot.
PSV subsequently pulled away to win 3-1 in Amsterdam, with recent signing Lutsharel Geertruida among the scorers. Van der Gijp felt Berghuis’s failure to take the first-half chance ultimately proved expensive for Ajax.
Fellow pundit Valentijn Driessen focused his criticism on Ajax coach Míchel. He questioned the decision to substitute Tolu Arokodare after an hour despite believing the striker had performed reasonably well. Driessen also said Abdellah Ouazane should have started and criticised the later introduction of Kasper Dolberg and Marcos Leonardo as a two-man attack. He additionally took issue with Anton Gaaei being used at right-back against Van Bommel when another defender was available on the bench.
