Van den Brom hails 18-year-old Nijstad after Twente’s European comeback
Ruud Nijstad’s first headed goal helped spark FC Twente’s turnaround against Pafos, earning praise from his coach and captain.

FC Twente coach John van den Brom praised Ruud Nijstad after the 18-year-old defender played a decisive role in the European victory over Pafos. Nijstad headed in the equaliser for 1-1, beginning the hosts’ turnaround on an evening when captain Robin Pröpper said Twente dominated and created numerous chances.
Nijstad had previously doubted his own heading ability, but Van den Brom explained that Twente’s staff had encouraged the tall defender to attack the ball more often. Speaking to Ziggo Sport, as reported by VI, the coach highlighted the significance of Nijstad scoring his first headed goal at such an important moment.
Van den Brom also acknowledged that the youngster still has areas to improve, including how he responds when things go wrong. Nevertheless, he stressed how impressive Nijstad’s performance was at only 18. The defender rejected offers from Barcelona, PSV and Eintracht Frankfurt last summer because he wanted to continue his development at Twente.
Nijstad said he was enjoying life with the team and felt at home in the shirt, describing European nights in front of Twente’s supporters as particularly special. He credited assistant coach Jeffrey de Visscher for repeatedly challenging him to score with his head. Van den Brom, meanwhile, offered no detailed preview of Sunday’s meeting with Ajax but made clear that Twente would be ready.
