Van Bronckhorst pleased with Ferri after Feyenoord starting debut

Giovanni van Bronckhorst praised Ferri after the striker made his first start for Feyenoord against NEC Nijmegen. The coach selected the Spaniard with a specific tactical role in mind and felt the decision was justified by his performance.
Van Bronckhorst had seen Ayase Ueda leave for OSC Lille following Feyenoord’s game against ADO Den Haag the previous week. Because the Japan international departed late in the transfer window, Feyenoord opted not to recruit a replacement. That left Van Bronckhorst with Ferri and Shaqueel van Persie as his two remaining options at centre-forward.
The Feyenoord coach believed Ferri’s ability to retain possession could be useful against NEC, having observed the Nijmegen side struggle with that type of striker against Bodø/Glimt. Feyenoord were able to exploit that area repeatedly, according to Van Bronckhorst. Voetbal International quoted him as saying it was “really a game for him.”
Ferri also made a direct contribution to the opening goal, laying the ball off for midfielder Gjivai Zechiël to score. Van Bronckhorst highlighted both the assist and the striker’s overall display as he assessed the starting debut positively. With no late replacement brought in for Ueda, the performance offered encouragement regarding one of the two forwards now available to the coach.
