Telstar’s 2-2 draw with Cambuur has gained international attention after an unusual moment surrounding the home side’s second penalty spread rapidly across social media. Goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr had already provided one major talking point by converting two spot-kicks in the Eredivisie fixture.
The viral clip captures referee Joey Kooij changing his initial free-kick decision to a Telstar penalty following advice from the VAR. As Kooij points towards the spot, Cambuur captain Jamal Amofa falls backwards, with his movement appearing perfectly synchronised with the referee’s arm signal.
De Telegraaf reports that an X user was the first to draw attention to the footage before it was shared by larger accounts, including ESPN and Polymarket. The clip had already accumulated at least 1.5 million views, turning Amofa’s reaction into the game’s second widely shared moment alongside Koeman’s penalties.
Amofa was in no mood to enjoy the attention after Cambuur surrendered their advantage. The defender told ESPN he felt only “frustration and disappointment”, according to De Telegraaf. He said Cambuur should never have allowed the match to slip away after going 2-0 ahead against ten men, particularly given the club’s need for three points.
