Suriname denied Nations League quarter-final place by 96th-minute Guatemala winner
Henk Fraser’s side slipped from top spot to third after Richonell Margaret’s red card and Matthew Evans’ dramatic late goal.

Suriname missed out on the Nations League quarter-finals in agonising fashion as Guatemala struck in the 96th minute to claim victory. A draw would have secured first place in the group for Henk Fraser’s team, but the late defeat instead left them third on goal difference.
The match remained goalless when substitute Richonell Margaret was shown a straight red card during the second half. According to Voetbal International, the dismissal was apparently for provoking the home supporters, although television footage did not clearly capture the incident.
Suriname resisted with ten players for more than half an hour before Matthew Evans finally beat goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen with the decisive goal. Guatemala consequently advanced as group winners, while Jamaica took second place after scoring one more goal than Suriname.
Fraser’s starting line-up also included Liam van Gelderen, Navajo Bakboord, Shaquille Pinas, Kenneth Paal, Immanuel Pherai, Shiloh ’t Zand and Gyrano Kerk. Guatemala will face Canada in the quarter-finals in November, while Dick Advocaat’s Curaçao have been paired with Panama.
