Sunderland reward Roefs with new five-year contract

Sunderland have handed Roefs a new five-year contract following an impressive first season at the English club. According to VI, the improved agreement also includes a salary increase and reflects the goalkeeper’s growing importance at the Stadium of Light.

The Netherlands international joined Sunderland from NEC last year in a deal worth more than €10 million. He immediately became the club’s first-choice goalkeeper and has remained a regular presence in the starting line-up.

Sporting director Florent Ghisolfi praised both Roefs’ performances and his attitude. He highlighted the goalkeeper’s humility, work ethic and desire to keep improving, describing those qualities as representative of the standards Sunderland want to establish.

Roefs also underlined his commitment to the club after signing the new terms. “Sunderland feels like my home,” he said in comments carried by VI. The goalkeeper looked back on a campaign in which Sunderland finished seventh and qualified for European football, while expressing confidence that the squad can still achieve more. He added that he is eager to contribute to what he believes can be a successful future for the club.
