Stewart says Geertruida immediately backed PSV move despite Feyenoord ties

PSV technical director Earnest Stewart has revealed that Lutsharel Geertruida was receptive to joining the Eindhoven club from the beginning. According to FCUpdate, the defender prioritised his sporting ambitions despite his deep connection with former club Feyenoord.

Geertruida played for Feyenoord from 2018 until 2024 and became a popular figure in Rotterdam. He won the league title and two KNVB Cups with the club, while his bond with Feyenoord was also explored in the documentary Kind van Zuid. His subsequent decision to join PSV has drawn an angry response from some Feyenoord supporters.

Stewart said the negotiations became more delicate once Geertruida’s name emerged publicly. The PSV director was not primarily concerned about the deal collapsing, but wondered whether the reaction in Rotterdam might affect the player or those close to him. He highlighted the potential influence of pressure on Geertruida’s family and wider circle.

However, Stewart said the defender had been decisive during their first conversation and made clear that he would approach the decision rationally. “He makes the choices for his career and with his head,” Stewart said, as quoted by FCUpdate. Although PSV considered whether outside pressure could alter Geertruida’s position, Stewart confirmed that it ultimately had no effect on the move.
