Ruud Nijstad admits Barcelona interest was difficult to ignore

Ruud Nijstad has acknowledged that reported interest from Barcelona occupied his thoughts, although FC Twente’s important run of fixtures remained his immediate priority. Speaking to Voetbal International, the defender described the attention surrounding his future as unusual and said the timing was far from ideal.

News of Barcelona’s interest emerged on the day of Twente’s away match against Qarabag. Nijstad said he knew there had been contact between the two clubs, but left discussions to his management team. He received only occasional updates so that the situation would not distract him during a significant week for Twente.

The prospect of being wanted by Barcelona nevertheless made an impression on Nijstad. He admitted that he considered what such a move might be like when circumstances allowed, while keeping his focus on his current responsibilities.

Twente’s position, however, was firm from the outset: Nijstad would not be permitted to leave. The player said he understood that stance after consciously signing a contract extension because he believes he can continue developing at the club. His plan now is to maintain his progress, play regularly and remain focused on Twente, where he says he is still happy.
