Ruud Gullit raises alarm over lack of cohesion in Netherlands defence
The former Oranje captain believes Xavi Hernández must solve structural problems at the back despite an unbeaten start to the Nations League campaign.
Ruud Gullit has expressed concern about the Netherlands’ defensive organisation after Xavi Hernández’s first four Nations League matches in charge. Oranje recorded two wins and two draws to lead Group A2, but they have now conceded in all 12 of their internationals this calendar year.
Gullit believes the problem extends beyond individual errors, with the defence and midfield failing to operate as coordinated units. Writing in his De Telegraaf column, as reported by FCUpdate, he said Oranje do not defend “as a block” and argued that players are making separate decisions over pressing, stepping forward and using the offside line.
The former Netherlands captain also questioned why a physically imposing back line has struggled in the air, particularly when defending corners. Virgil van Dijk, who made his 100th international appearance against Serbia and wore the armband for the 85th time, was criticised for avoiding too many challenges. Gullit also described Jurriën Timber as excellent in possession but prone to poor defensive choices, while suggesting Denzel Dumfries leaves excessive space when advancing.
Micky van de Ven received especially detailed scrutiny. Gullit praised the defender’s exceptional speed but said he is too eager to enter challenges and frequently uses his pace to repair mistakes. He urged Van de Ven to anticipate danger more effectively and reserve that speed for better moments. Amid the wider criticism, goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was identified as the dependable exception in the Netherlands’ defence.
