Roma rescue late Atalanta win after Malen’s prolific opening
Donyell Malen was unable to add to his five-goal start, but two late strikes preserved Roma’s perfect Serie A record.
AS Roma maintained their winning start to the Serie A season by overturning a late deficit in a 2-1 home victory over Atalanta. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side had opened the campaign with successive 4-0 wins against Fiorentina and Lecce, with Netherlands international Donyell Malen scoring five times across those matches.
Roma created numerous chances during a dominant first half against Atalanta but failed to convert them. The visitors then went ahead against the run of play two minutes after the interval, when Brazilian midfielder Ederson drove a powerful shot high into the net. Malen’s afternoon ended in the 63rd minute when Gasperini substituted the forward.
Atalanta remained in front until the closing stages. Mario Hermoso equalised in the 89th minute before Matías Soulé completed Roma’s comeback with the winner in added time. Dutch pair Marten de Roon and Devyne Rensch were both unused substitutes for the hosts, with De Roon facing his former club.
Inter also preserved their perfect league record with a dramatic 3-2 home win over Napoli. Napoli led through Matteo Politano and Rasmus Højlund before Lautaro Martínez pulled one back and Marcus Thuram headed Inter level. Martínez then struck again in stoppage time. Sam Beukema and Noa Lang remained on Napoli’s bench, while Inter moved to nine points from three games.
