Refereeing chief admits Van Bommel should have seen red in Ajax-PSV clash

Dutch refereeing chief Raymond van Meenen has acknowledged that PSV winger Ruben van Bommel should have been sent off during his side’s 3-1 Eredivisie victory away to Ajax, according to Voetbalzone.
The incident occurred in the 80th minute, with PSV leading 2-1. Van Bommel arrived late as Ajax defender Aaron Bouwman stooped to head the ball, causing a heavy collision. Bouwman remained on the ground and appeared to be experiencing discomfort around his head.
Ajax defender Youri Baas reacted angrily and confronted Van Bommel, but referee Sander van Eijk showed the PSV player only a yellow card. The decision was subsequently questioned in ESPN’s studio, where analyst Hugo Borst said he had spoken directly to Van Meenen. Borst relayed that the refereeing chief accepted the officials had made an error and agreed the challenge warranted a red card.
Presenter Jan Joost van Gangelen explained that a challenge which endangers an opponent’s safety should be punished as serious foul play. The missed dismissal did not prevent PSV from extending their advantage, with the Eindhoven club ultimately completing a 3-1 win in Amsterdam.
