PSV beat Ajax 3-1 after Geertruida restores lead in Amsterdam
Ricardo Pepi struck early before Lutsharel Geertruida and Esmir Bajraktarevic secured PSV’s first victory over Ajax in six meetings.
PSV earned a 3-1 victory away to Ajax in an eventful Eredivisie contest, ending a five-match wait for a win in the fixture. Ricardo Pepi gave the visitors a fifth-minute lead, converting from close range after Ruben van Bommel headed Ivan Perisic’s cross into his path.
Ajax recovered after PSV’s forceful opening and equalised midway through the first half. Tolu Arokodare found the net after a scrappy exchange involving Davy Klaassen, registering his sixth goal in eight appearances. The hosts then had opportunities to move ahead, but Steven Berghuis fired a rebound wide and captain Klaassen shot over following effective pressure from Jorthy Mokio.
Instead, PSV regained the advantage shortly before half-time. Perisic first went close on the counterattack, before Lutsharel Geertruida collected the ball following a cleared corner and curled a composed finish into the far top corner on his first start for the club.
The second half produced fewer chances as Ajax coach Míchel turned to several substitutes, including Sofyan Amrabat and Viktor Tsygankov. Van Bommel later received a yellow card for a heavy aerial challenge that left Aaron Bouwman requiring treatment and eventually being replaced by Thilo Kehrer. Ajax’s protests did not change the decision, and Esmir Bajraktarevic added PSV’s third goal late on to complete the scoring and hand Míchel his first defeat as Ajax coach.
