PSV and Feyenoord lead Dutch contingent into Champions League campaign
The Eredivisie pair begin their European campaigns later this week, while a large group of Dutch players will represent clubs across the continent.
PSV and Feyenoord will fly the Dutch flag as the Champions League begins with an opening matchday spread across three evenings. Feyenoord face Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday, while PSV welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to the Philips Stadion on Thursday. Both matches kick off at 18:45.
Several Dutch players are involved in Tuesday’s programme. Former FC Volendam defender Xavier Mbuyamba and Melayro Bogarde are part of the LASK squad preparing for the Austrian club’s competition debut against AEK Athens. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have Marco Bizot, Ian Maatsen and Lamare Bogarde available for their meeting with Club Brugge.
Denzel Dumfries is set for a notable reunion when Real Madrid host Inter. The right-back joined the Spanish club this summer after five years in Milan. Joey Veerman is also preparing for his first Champions League appearance with Borussia Dortmund, who begin against Villarreal following the midfielder’s move from PSV.
Wednesday brings further Dutch interest beyond Feyenoord’s trip to Barcelona. Frenkie de Jong is injured and unavailable for the Catalan side, while Liverpool’s registered squad includes Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Jeremie Frimpong ahead of the game against Atlético Madrid. Elsewhere, Napoli’s Noa Lang and Sam Beukema face an Arsenal side featuring Jurriën Timber. Debutants Viking FK could call upon former PSV player Essien Bassey and ex-FC Groningen striker Romano Postema against VfB Stuttgart.
