Overmars’ Antwerp exit follows renewed health concerns

Marc Overmars’ departure from Antwerp surprised many in Belgium, with the Dutch director having attended the club’s match against Standard Liège only last Saturday. According to Het Laatste Nieuws, as relayed by Voetbal International, those who saw him that evening noticed nothing unusual.

Behind the scenes, however, his condition had reportedly deteriorated. Overmars suffered a heart attack at the end of 2022 and was subsequently unable to undertake significant physical exertion. He remained active at Antwerp because he could work at his own pace and was supported by capable colleagues.

The Belgian report says Overmars and Antwerp had been discussing a contract extension before the latest health setback. Despite his physical limitations, he had continued to play a central role in the club’s sporting operation.

Antwerp supporters’ groups have praised his impact. Supporters’ club chairman Dominik Van Landeghem described Overmars as the architect of the side that won the Belgian league and cup double under Mark van Bommel in 2023. His transfer record was also highlighted: across nine windows, Antwerp reportedly received €181 million from player sales while spending €59 million, leaving a positive balance of €122 million.
