Opta model gives PSV play-off hope but predicts early Feyenoord exit

Opta’s supercomputer has projected contrasting Champions League campaigns for PSV and Feyenoord, with the Eindhoven side expected to reach the play-off round but the Rotterdam club facing an early exit. Neither Dutch representative is considered a realistic contender for the trophy.
PSV are placed 16th in the modelled league-phase standings and given a 54.71% chance of progressing to the intermediate play-off round. However, Peter Bosz’s side have only a 19.35% probability of reaching the last 16 and a 0.76% chance of winning the competition.
Feyenoord’s outlook is considerably less encouraging. Opta ranks them 33rd, ahead of only Shakhtar Donetsk, Sabah FC and Slovan Bratislava. Their probability of reaching the play-off round is listed at 31.79%, while their estimated chance of lifting the trophy is just 0.03%.
At the top of the forecast, Arsenal are rated as Champions League favourites with a 20.86% chance of winning the final at Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano on 5 June. Bayern Munich follow on 18.91%, with Manchester City third on 12.03%. The league phase is scheduled to begin on Tuesday evening with six matches, but Opta’s percentages remain projections rather than guarantees of how the competition will unfold.
