NEC defeat reportedly puts Olympiakos coach Mendilibar under pressure

José Luis Mendilibar’s position at Olympiakos has reportedly become uncertain following the club’s Champions League qualifying defeat to NEC Nijmegen. Voetbal International, citing reports from Marca and Greek outlet SporFM, says the coach could lose his job after elimination in the third qualifying round.
Olympiakos have played only the two matches against NEC so far this season. Their exit from Champions League qualification means they will instead continue their European campaign in the Europa League, while the Greek domestic season is due to begin next week.
Mendilibar has been in charge since February 2024 and initially enjoyed major success. Olympiakos won the Conference League during that campaign before adding the Greek league title and domestic cup the following season. However, their only silverware last season was the Super Cup, and the early European setback has now placed his future under scrutiny.
No dismissal has been confirmed. Should Olympiakos decide to make a change, Marcelino and Eder Sarabia are reportedly the two candidates being considered. Both Spanish coaches are currently without a club after leaving Villarreal and Elche respectively this summer.
