NEC add Porto-developed defender Gabriel Brás to depleted back line
The 22-year-old Portugal Under-21 international gives Nijmegen coach Dick Schreuder another option in central defence and on the right.
NEC Nijmegen have strengthened their defensive options with the arrival of Gabriel Brás. The 22-year-old right-footed centre-back comes through FC Porto’s academy and has spent recent seasons playing for the Portuguese club’s B team, without making a first-team appearance.
Brás has also represented Portugal at Under-21 level, earning six caps. At NEC, he will wear the number 73 shirt and can operate either in central defence or on the right side of the back line.
His arrival gives coach Dick Schreuder additional cover during a demanding period. Philippe Sandler was injured against Olympiakos, while Perr Schuurs is not yet fit. Bram Nuytinck has only recently returned from an injury, although he was able to feature during the closing stages of the Olympiakos match.
Technical director Carlos Aalbers said the defender’s versatility would give NEC more options. Brás joins competition that includes Sandler, Nuytinck, Schuurs, Brayann Pereira, Thomas Ouwejan, Tobias Storm and Deveron Fonville. NEC are preparing for a two-legged tie against Bodø/Glimt as they seek qualification for the Champions League league phase, adding to the need for greater defensive depth.
