Nathan Aké helps Fenerbahçe return to Champions League

Nathan Aké and Fenerbahçe have secured a place in the Champions League after a 2-1 second-leg victory away to Olympique Lyonnais. The result completed a 3-2 aggregate win following a 1-1 draw in Istanbul and sends the Turkish club into the competition for the first time since the 2008/09 season.

Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown put Fenerbahçe 2-0 ahead inside half an hour in France. Malik Fofana revived Lyon’s hopes with a volley after the interval, but the hosts then had efforts from Loïs Openda and Kaïl Boudache disallowed for offside. Aké and Lyon defender Ruben Kluivert both played the full 90 minutes.

Romano Postema’s Viking FK also advanced, beating Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 at home after the opening leg had finished 2-2. Postema remained on the bench as the Norwegian club sealed its return to the Champions League after a 34-year absence.

AEK progressed with a 4-0 win over Levski Sofia following a goalless first leg, with former Ajax midfielder Razvan Marin scoring the fourth from the penalty spot. Slovan Bratislava completed the qualifying line-up by defeating NK Celje 2-1 after extra time under coach Yaya Touré, having drawn the first meeting 1-1.
