NAC investigation leads to 24 stadium bans after Heerenveen disorder

NAC Breda say 24 nationwide stadium bans have been imposed following an investigation into disorder during and after their match against SC Heerenveen on 10 May. The sanctions relate to violence, objects and liquids being thrown, illegal fireworks being launched onto the pitch and other misconduct.

The KNVB has also fined NAC €10,000 over the incidents. However, the Dutch football association took account of the club’s immediate response, subsequent investigation and efforts to identify individual offenders. It therefore decided against a heavier punishment, such as a full or suspended home match behind closed doors or the partial closure of Section G. NAC have accepted the proposed settlement.

General director Remco Oversier said more than 20,000 supporters had rejected the behaviour of the small group involved. “This reprehensible behaviour has no place at NAC,” he said in the club’s statement. NAC intend to pursue further legal and civil action where possible, including attempts to recover costs and damages from those responsible.

The club added that the conclusion of the investigation did not mark the end of its response. Lessons from the events will feed into the continued development of NAC’s safety operation, with several improvement measures introduced ahead of the new season. The stated aim is to preserve a welcoming and atmospheric environment at the Rat Verlegh Stadion while leaving room for the passion associated with the club.
