NAC Breda to mark 30 years at Stadionstraat home
Former players will return and Bob Maaskant will be remembered when NAC host VVV-Venlo in their first home game of the season.
NAC Breda will commemorate three decades at their Stadionstraat home when VVV-Venlo visit for the club’s first home fixture of the new season on Friday, 14 August. The evening will include a minute’s silence for Bob Maaskant, whom the club describes as one of the founders of the “Avondje NAC” tradition.
The anniversary falls almost exactly 30 years after the stadium staged its first official match. NAC faced Dordrecht ’90 in the KNVB Beker group stage on 16 August 1996, winning 4-2 at a ground then known as the Fujifilm Stadion.
Several members of the 1996 squad will return to Breda for the occasion. They will attend a club gathering before watching the match against VVV, with former goalkeeper and NAC icon John Karelse among those expected. Stanley MacDonald, who scored the first official goal at the stadium, will also be present.
MacDonald opened the scoring against Dordrecht, while Geert Brusselers and Graham Arnold supplied the other goals. Arnold struck twice in the historic victory. Friday’s celebration will begin NAC’s latest home campaign, this time in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, with the club saying tickets remain available for the fixture.
