Míchel explains Arokodare substitution in Ajax defeat to PSV
The Ajax coach said the striker was withdrawn after an hour because the hosts needed more energy while chasing the game.
Ajax coach Míchel has explained why goalscorer Tolu Arokodare was replaced by Kasper Dolberg during Saturday’s 3-1 Eredivisie defeat at home to PSV. The change came after around an hour, with Ajax trailing 2-1 at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Speaking to ESPN after the match, in comments reported by Voetbalzone, Míchel said Arokodare was taken off because of a lack of energy. Although the coach stressed that Ajax remain fully behind the striker, he felt fresh legs were necessary to increase the pressure and attack the space behind PSV’s defence.
Míchel had wanted Arokodare to operate as a focal point, retaining possession so Ajax could build their play around him. However, the coach was unhappy with the forward’s opening contributions and called for greater determination and energy in his actions. Arokodare nevertheless found the net before making way for Dolberg.
The Ajax coach said the introductions of Dolberg and Leonardo were intended to keep the team competing at full intensity and provide more runs in behind PSV’s centre-backs. Those adjustments did not produce an equaliser, however, and PSV added a third goal in stoppage time to complete a 3-1 victory in Amsterdam.
