Mexx Meerdink appeared to reveal that Troy Parrott could leave AZ after scoring in Saturday’s 4-1 Eredivisie victory away to FC Utrecht. Parrott missed the match, officially because of a minor injury, but his fellow striker’s post-match comments raised fresh questions about his future.

Before kick-off, AZ coach Leeroy Echteld said Parrott was not fit enough to travel to Utrecht. He insisted the injury explanation was genuine when asked about the forward’s absence.

Meerdink then offered a different indication while speaking to reporters after the game. Asked about Parrott, he said it was unfortunate that the Irishman was going to leave but described the situation as an opportunity to demonstrate his own qualities. He also said Parrott deserved a significant next step.

When a reporter highlighted the apparent revelation, Meerdink immediately changed course. “I have no idea,” he said, as quoted by De Telegraaf, before denying that he had said Parrott would depart. The outlet reports that Parrott has previously expressed a desire to move on and that AZ are seeking a club-record fee for their striker. No transfer or destination has been confirmed.
