Memphis Depay is expected to be absent from the Netherlands squad for the forthcoming international window because of injury. Voetbalzone, citing NU.nl reporter Rypke Bakker, says the national team’s record scorer will not be selected for the Nations League matches against Greece and Germany.
The report adds that Depay has gone eight months without scoring. Donyell Malen and Brian Brobbey are both expected to receive call-ups from head coach Xavi Hernández, potentially leaving Mexx Meerdink and Joshua Zirkzee competing for any remaining attacking place.
Frenkie de Jong is reportedly due to return in midfield. Gjivai Zechiël, however, could instead join the Netherlands Under-21 squad for important qualifiers. Feyenoord defender Givairo Read may also remain with the U21s, where the report identifies his role as captain as an important factor.
The Netherlands are also expected to be without Jeremie Frimpong and Nathan Aké because of injuries. Their absences could open a route back into the squad for Ian Maatsen, while Voetbalzone says a senior call-up for Ajax left-back Owen Wijndal cannot be ruled out. The KNVB is scheduled to announce the squad at around midday on Friday.
