Marc Overmars leaves Antwerp role immediately on health grounds

Marc Overmars has resigned as Royal Antwerp’s sporting director with immediate effect, saying his health can no longer withstand the pressure of professional football. The former Netherlands international announced the decision in a message to the Belgian club’s supporters, as reported by VI.

Overmars said years of fatigue and stress had reached a critical point over the weekend. He referred to the continuing effects of the heart attack he suffered four years ago and said doctors had warned of a serious risk if he failed to listen to his body. “My energy is completely gone,” he wrote in the statement published through Antwerp’s official channels.

The 52-year-old had wanted to remain in his post, with discussions over a contract extension already under way. However, he has now decided to stop all professional activity for the foreseeable future. Overmars described the decision as deeply painful and emphasised the strong connection he has developed with Antwerp, the city and the club’s supporters.

Overmars took charge of Antwerp’s sporting operation on 22 March 2022, a little over a month after his high-profile departure from Ajax. Antwerp won the Belgian Cup in his first season, while Mark van Bommel subsequently guided the club to its first league title in 66 years. Overmars plans to bid farewell to supporters before beginning a period of complete rest, although he said he expects to return to De Bosuil as a visitor in the future.
