Luuk Brouwers leaves Heerenveen for Omonia Nicosia after transfer dispute

Luuk Brouwers has joined Omonia Nicosia after the Cypriot club reached an agreement with Heerenveen. The 28-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year contract that includes an option for a further season.

The transfer follows public frustration from Brouwers over Heerenveen’s handling of his proposed departure. In comments reported by VI, he criticised the club’s approach after receiving limited playing time across the previous three matches. An agreement with Omonia has now allowed him to make the overseas move he wanted.

Brouwers leaves Heerenveen after three years with the club. He made 92 first-team appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists, and served as captain for two seasons.

Technical manager Johan Hansma said Brouwers had become one of the recognisable figures in the team, but that increased competition had changed his role during the past season. Hansma added that the midfielder, who had one year remaining on his contract, had repeatedly expressed a desire to play abroad. Heerenveen wished Brouwers success in Cyprus and said it hoped to arrange an appropriate farewell in front of the club’s supporters at a later date.
