Lazio have placed Ajax centre-back Josip Sutalo at the top of their defensive shortlist, according to transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, as cited by FCUpdate. Czech international Stepan Chaloupek of Sparta Prague is also reportedly among the Italian club’s options.
The 26-year-old Sutalo has not played a minute this season and is described as one of Ajax’s highest earners. He could be allowed to leave during the remaining weeks of the summer window, with possible departures required to create financial room for further additions.
Ajax technical director Jordi Cruijff is reportedly still hoping to recruit a replacement for Mika Godts, who was sold to Paris Saint-Germain, as well as a defensive midfielder. FCUpdate says exits involving Sutalo, Kasper Dolberg, Ko Itakura or Owen Wijndal could help provide the necessary space in the club’s budget.
A move would renew business between Ajax and Lazio after the Rome club signed Kenneth Taylor during last season’s winter break. Ajax paid Dinamo Zagreb more than €20 million for Sutalo in 2023. The Croatian defender has since made 108 competitive appearances and scored four goals for the Amsterdam side, while his contract runs until mid-2028. No agreement or formal offer from Lazio has been reported.
