Kenneth Perez dismisses Fortuna Sittard despite strong Eredivisie start

Kenneth Perez has delivered a blunt assessment of Fortuna Sittard, despite the club’s encouraging opening to the Eredivisie season. Voetbalzone reported that the analyst described Fortuna as “a club of nothing” during ESPN’s Voetbalpraat, prompting laughter from fellow panellists Willem Vissers and Maarten Wijffels.

Perez nevertheless praised head coach Danny Buijs for making Fortuna relevant. He argued that the club would attract little discussion without such a distinctive figure in charge, while also pointing to the presence of interesting players and the attention surrounding Ihattaren. In Perez’s view, Buijs is central to how Fortuna present and promote themselves.

Vissers offered a more positive perspective. He noted that Fortuna earned promotion in 2018 and have since established themselves in the top flight despite their relatively modest size. He also highlighted the club’s recruitment policy, citing former Fortuna forward Kaj Sierhuis as an example.

Results have strengthened Fortuna’s position early in the campaign. Buijs’s side have taken 10 points from their first five matches and sit fourth in the Eredivisie. They opened the season by holding reigning champions PSV to a 2-2 draw, with a 2-0 defeat by AZ their only loss so far. Fortuna next host Ajax on Saturday; the Amsterdam club have played one game fewer and would also reach 10 points with a victory.
