Jong Utrecht coach laughs off remarkable refereeing call in goalless draw

Jong FC Utrecht coach Mark Otten struggled to contain his disbelief after a contentious refereeing decision in his side’s 0-0 Keuken Kampioen Divisie draw with FC Eindhoven.

The incident occurred when Emmanuel Owen broke towards the visitors’ goal. Eindhoven goalkeeper Jort Borgmans raced off his line but failed to reach the ball and collided with the Utrecht attacker. Rather than awarding Jong Utrecht a free-kick, referee Joshua Kuipers ruled in Eindhoven’s favour.

Otten said Kuipers believed Owen had initiated the contact with Borgmans, an explanation which prompted the coach to laugh during his post-match interview. He nevertheless stopped short of attacking the referee, acknowledging that officials do not have the same opportunity to review footage immediately. Otten maintained that the call was incorrect and had disadvantaged his team.

Borgmans also admitted that he had misjudged the situation. The goalkeeper explained that the ball bounced higher than anticipated and that he appeared to slip as he took off, causing him to miss it and make contact with Owen. He had hoped the forward might have been offside but said he still needed to watch the incident again. Neither side ultimately found a breakthrough, with the match finishing without a goal.
