Janmaat credits Ajax history for premium transfer fees
The former Netherlands defender believes Ajax’s reputation helps the club command sums rarely received by domestic rivals PSV and Feyenoord.

Daryl Janmaat says Ajax’s historic standing continues to give the Amsterdam club an advantage over PSV and Feyenoord in the transfer market. Speaking to FCUpdate, the former defender expressed surprise at the fees Ajax can command even after a poor season.
Janmaat highlighted Sean Steur’s move to Newcastle United as the clearest example. Ajax reportedly received €27 million including bonuses for the midfielder, despite him having made only 26 official first-team appearances. “Ajax always seem to get the most money for players,” Janmaat told FCUpdate, describing the sums involved as remarkable.
The former Netherlands international also pointed to reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain in Mika Godts. According to the report, PSG had been seriously pursuing the winger, with a bid worth between €50 million and €55 million mentioned the previous week. Janmaat acknowledged Godts’s quality but noted that the player had not performed at that level for an extended period.
Janmaat suggested Ajax’s past achievements and reputation may explain why buyers continue to pay a premium. He contrasted those deals with the market for players at Feyenoord and PSV, although he identified Ismael Saibari as a notable exception. The Morocco international moved from PSV to Bayern Munich for €50 million during the same summer. In Janmaat’s view, however, transfers on the scale of Steur’s are still much less likely to happen at Feyenoord.
