Hugo Borst changed his assessment of Tolu Arokodare during Ajax’s meeting with PSV, moving from sharp criticism of the striker’s pre-match prayer to enthusiastic praise of his performance. The analyst voiced his initial frustration while appearing on ESPN programme De Eretribune.
Borst objected in particular to the public nature of Arokodare’s religious expression, which was shown on camera before the game. Former midfielder Karim El Ahmadi disagreed, arguing that the Ajax forward should be free to follow his own routine because it harmed nobody. Borst maintained that he respected religious people but felt such displays could be excessive in a public setting.
His tone changed once the match was under way. Arokodare initially had difficulty retaining possession, prompting visible frustration from Ajax coach Míchel Sánchez, but he then scored the 1-1 and demonstrated the qualities he could offer the side. Borst subsequently declared, “I’m convinced,” according to FCUpdate, and described the Nigerian as both an impressive person and an entertaining striker.
The pundit went further by comparing Arokodare favourably with Brian Brobbey, saying the current Ajax forward was stronger and, in his view, better. The 25-year-old is spending the season at Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Ajax also hold an option to make the move permanent.
