The opening Eredivisie round ended with SC Heerenveen claiming a 1-0 home victory over FC Twente. Luca Oyen scored the only goal in Friesland, completing a Sunday programme in which Ajax, Feyenoord and FC Groningen also began their league campaigns with wins.

Ajax beat PEC Zwolle 2-0 after the hosts were reduced to ten players in the 57th minute, when Sherel Floranus received a red card. Substitutes Jorthy Mokio and Julian Brandt then helped the Amsterdam side secure all three points. Feyenoord earned a narrow 1-0 derby victory at Sparta Rotterdam, surviving a late scare when the hosts had an injury-time effort disallowed for a push.

Groningen defeated FC Utrecht 2-1 at the Euroborg. Brynjolfur Willumsson struck in the ninth minute before Thom van Bergen doubled the advantage shortly after half-time. Substitute Adrian Blake pulled one back for Utrecht with ten minutes remaining, but the visitors could not complete the comeback.

Earlier in the round, Excelsior opened the season with a 4-0 win away to SC Cambuur, while Telstar beat NEC 2-1. Go Ahead Eagles recorded a 4-1 home victory over Willem II, PSV were held to a 2-2 draw by Fortuna Sittard, and AZ defeated promoted ADO Den Haag 2-0 after being made to wait for the breakthrough.
