Frenkie de Jong has had to postpone the next stage of his recovery after heavy rain disrupted Barcelona’s training schedule on Monday. FCUpdate reports that the midfielder was expected to complete a substantial part of the session with his team-mates, but his planned return to group work was delayed by at least a day.

De Jong reportedly arrived at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper at 8.35am, making him the first Barcelona player at the complex. However, the conditions meant he instead followed an individual programme, alongside goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Raphinha. Gavi, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martín and Alejandro Balde were among those who still trained outside.

The Netherlands international has been sidelined for more than two months with a right-knee injury. According to the report, he first experienced discomfort during the World Cup group match against Sweden but continued to represent Oranje. He then played 110 minutes against Morocco as the Dutch were eliminated on penalties.

Tests after De Jong returned to Barcelona found a tear in the medial ligament of his right knee. The player and club opted for treatment without surgery, and he has since been increasing his workload gradually. Weather permitting, he could join a significant portion of Tuesday’s field session, although a return to competitive action is not yet imminent.
