Hans Kraay Jr backs Bendegúz Kovács as AZ’s next striker
The 1.99-metre Jong AZ forward has impressed the analyst, who believes he could eventually succeed Mexx Meerdink in Alkmaar.

Hans Kraay Jr believes Jong AZ striker Bendegúz Kovács has the qualities to establish himself in Alkmaar, despite the young forward currently having to remain patient in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie. The 1.99-metre attacker moved from Hungary to the Netherlands at the age of 14 and has since become a highly regarded prospect.
Kraay recalled initially being struck by Kovács’ unusual appearance for a centre-forward when he first watched him come off the bench for Jong AZ. His opinion quickly changed after seeing the striker control the ball in a crowded penalty area. Kraay highlighted the sensitivity in Kovács’ left foot and his first touch, telling Voetbal International: “I immediately felt: this could become something.”
The analyst also expressed confidence in AZ’s development plan. Kovács, who has already made two appearances for Hungary, is continuing to collect minutes at second-tier level rather than being rushed into the first team.
Kraay suggested that the forward may eventually benefit if Mexx Meerdink leaves AZ. He claimed the club expect Meerdink, who he says is being monitored by leading European sides, to be sold either this summer or next. In that scenario, Kraay believes AZ would be ready to promote Kovács as an in-house successor rather than search elsewhere. No deal or confirmed departure for Meerdink has been reported.
