Frenkie de Jong is aiming to resume full training with Barcelona after the September international break, according to a report relayed by FCUpdate. The 29-year-old has been sidelined by the knee injury with which he returned from the World Cup with the Netherlands this summer.

Barcelona reportedly favoured an operation, a course of action that could have ruled the midfielder out for a substantial part of the season. De Jong has instead opted for conservative treatment. A significant test at the end of August produced disappointing results, but there is now cautious hope that his absence is moving closer to an end.

The report says De Jong is currently limited to running drills on the grass and can only move in straight lines. He has not yet resumed work with the ball or trained alongside his Barcelona team-mates. He intends to increase his rehabilitation efforts during the international break beginning on 21 September.

His provisional target is to rejoin the full squad on 8 October, when Barcelona’s international players are due to return to training. That timeline remains dependent on De Jong feeling comfortable and experiencing no further problems with the injured ligament in his right knee. Even if he meets that target, he is expected to require several additional weeks of training before being ready for competitive action.
