Fortuna Sittard hold off Cambuur before ’t Zand seals 3-1 win

Fortuna Sittard survived a sustained Cambuur fightback to claim a 3-1 home victory in the second round of the Eredivisie season. The result followed Fortuna’s opening draw with PSV, while promoted Cambuur were left empty-handed despite creating several opportunities to equalise.

The hosts established a 2-0 advantage, but Cambuur pulled one back and were the stronger side for periods before half-time. Fortuna goalkeeper Mattijs Branderhorst then became increasingly influential after the break, producing a series of saves as the visitors pushed for 2-2. His close-range stop from Ismael Baouf was particularly important.

Cambuur’s best late opening fell to Sami Bouhoudane, who sent a close-range header wide in the third minute of stoppage time. The visitors also appealed for a penalty after Branderhorst came out late and made contact with the head of Binder. The VAR reviewed the incident but allowed play to continue.

Shiloh ’t Zand finally ended Cambuur’s challenge in the sixth minute of added time, finishing calmly after a cut-back from Pinto. The Feyenoord loanee was making his Fortuna debut after illness kept him out of the previous match. Elsewhere, PSV defeated Excelsior 2-1 through goals from Ruben van Bommel and Ricardo Pepi, while NEC and AZ both recorded 4-1 away wins against Willem II and FC Utrecht respectively.
