FC Utrecht vow action after Go Ahead Eagles match abandoned
The Eredivisie fixture will resume behind closed doors after fireworks and cups were thrown onto the pitch at Stadion Galgenwaard.
FC Utrecht have condemned the behaviour of some home supporters after Saturday’s Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles was abandoned with the visitors leading 3-1. The club have promised to identify those responsible and impose appropriate measures.
Referee Martin van de Kerkhof initially suspended play after fireworks were thrown towards the pitch at Stadion Galgenwaard. The game later resumed, but a large number of cups were subsequently thrown onto the playing surface, prompting the referee to abandon the contest with 25 minutes remaining.
The KNVB has decided that those final 25 minutes will be played on Tuesday from 14:00, with the stadium closed to supporters. Go Ahead were on course to inflict a fourth defeat in five league matches on Utrecht, who are in their first season under head coach Anthony Correia, when play was halted for good.
General director Edo Keuning said Utrecht were deeply disappointed by how the evening ended and stressed the danger posed to players, staff and spectators. “This has nothing to do with supporting FC Utrecht,” he said in comments carried by FCUpdate. Utrecht will review available camera footage in an effort to identify the offenders. Keuning also underlined that thousands of other home fans had supported the team appropriately and were not to blame for the disruption.
