FC Utrecht-Go Ahead Eagles to resume behind closed doors
The interrupted match at De Galgenwaard will continue on Tuesday afternoon with Go Ahead holding a 3-1 lead.
FC Utrecht’s disrupted home match against Go Ahead Eagles will be completed without spectators on Tuesday, Go Ahead announced on Saturday evening. Play is scheduled to restart at 14:00 on 8 September at De Galgenwaard, with the visitors leading 3-1.
Go Ahead had built a three-goal advantage by the hour mark through Mathis Suray, Søren Tengstedt and Viktor Edvardsen. The match was then stopped for the first time after fireworks were thrown from a stand, with some landing on the pitch.
The players returned around 20 minutes later following a spell in the dressing rooms. Dani de Wit quickly reduced Utrecht’s deficit to 3-1, but the restart did not last long. Players became involved in a confrontation over the ball after the goal, before cups were thrown onto the playing surface. Van den Kerkhof subsequently brought the match to another halt.
The interruption adds to a difficult opening to the season for Anthony Correia’s Utrecht. They collected only one point from their first four matches, secured away against Sparta Rotterdam. Utrecht will now have to attempt a two-goal comeback in the remaining portion of the Go Ahead fixture, but will do so in an empty stadium.
