FC Utrecht back Correia as club confronts poor form and spending cuts

FC Utrecht’s hierarchy continues to support coach Correia despite the team’s troubled run and growing dissatisfaction among supporters. The coach changed his approach against Go Ahead Eagles in an attempt to halt the slide, abandoning a five-defender plan and adding Guus Offerhaus to midfield while deploying Dani de Wit in a deeper role.

Correia said the revised set-up reflected the squad’s preferred solution. However, Utrecht still allowed their opponents too much space. He identified poor communication, a lack of connection between players and insufficiently decisive defending as key issues. As reported by Voetbal International, the coach acknowledged that the current level is “not good enough” but insisted his staff must keep working towards a more coherent team.

Board member Kees Jansma has also addressed the wider discontent surrounding the club. Technical director Jordy Zuidam has faced criticism, including through banners displayed near the stadium, but Jansma defended his record and questioned the scale of the reaction from supporters.

Jansma said Utrecht’s three shareholders want the club to reduce expenditure and return to a more sustainable foundation, with greater emphasis on stability and youth development. He also backed the appointment of Correia, arguing that a three-year policy needs time to take effect and that the leadership should not immediately interfere with the coach’s methods.
