FC Twente respond to early setback with 3-1 home win over PEC Zwolle

FC Twente recovered from falling behind to beat PEC Zwolle 3-1 in their first home league match of the season on 16 August 2026. The result provided an immediate response to the defeat referenced by captain Robin Pröpper from the previous week.

Zwolle struck first, but Twente maintained their attacking approach and Daouda Weidmann brought the hosts level. Daan Rots later made it 3-1 in the 69th minute, beating the goalkeeper with a shot from outside the penalty area. Twente continued to pursue another goal after establishing their two-goal advantage, with substitutes Filip Thorvaldsen and Sam Lammers among those to receive chances.

Thorvaldsen made his Twente debut with ten minutes remaining, replacing fellow Norwegian Sondre Ørjasæter. Lammers subsequently came on for Wout Weghorst, while Guilherme Peixoto, Kristian Hlynsson and Thomas van den Belt were also introduced during the second half.

John van den Brom felt Twente had controlled the contest despite initially going behind. The coach said his team had played to win throughout and created opportunities for a wider margin, while also explaining that his substitutions had been influenced by a busy schedule. Twente had played the previous Thursday and will next host Qarabağ at De Grolsch Veste in the UEFA Conference League play-offs, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 on Thursday.
