FC Twente beaten by Genk despite late Marko Pjaca goal
John van den Brom’s side struck the woodwork three times before Pjaca reduced the deficit in a 2-1 friendly defeat at the Cegeka Arena.
FC Twente suffered a 2-1 friendly defeat against KRC Genk at the Cegeka Arena on Sunday evening. The match formed part of the Belgian club’s annual fan day, with around 8,700 spectators in attendance.
Genk established a two-goal advantage inside 14 minutes. Bryan Heynen opened the scoring in the seventh minute when his long-range attempt took a deflection and left Lars Unnerstall unable to respond. Junya Ito then finished a counter-attack to double the hosts’ lead.
Twente had plenty of possession and created several opportunities after the interval. Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink was denied by the goalkeeper before later hitting the post, while a Sam Lammers header was pushed against the crossbar. Marko Pjaca also struck the woodwork with a curling effort before finally scoring in the 86th minute from Naci Ünüvar’s assist. The visitors could not find an equaliser in the remaining minutes.
John van den Brom made three changes from Twente’s previous game in Budapest. Ramiz Zerrouki and Ruud Nijstad were unavailable because they were not fit, with Mathias Kjølø and Robin Pröpper taking their places. Daouda Weidmann replaced Thomas van den Belt, while Younes Taha was also absent from the squad because he was not fit. Van den Brom made several second-half substitutions, including the introductions of Pjaca, Ünüvar, Lammers and Vennegoor of Hesselink.
