Excelsior sweep aside Willem II with 3-0 win in Tilburg

Excelsior claimed a convincing 3-0 Eredivisie victory away to Willem II, extending their strong opening to the season while increasing the pressure on the Tilburg side. Willem II remain near the bottom of the table with only one point from their first four matches.

The visitors went ahead after eight minutes. Irakli Yegoian delivered a good cross for David Garden, who converted from close range. Excelsior doubled their advantage before half-time when defender Rick Meissen headed in from a corner, registering the first Eredivisie goal of his career.

Willem II pushed forward after the interval as they attempted to find a route back into the contest, but Excelsior resisted that pressure and protected their two-goal lead. Yegoian then completed the scoring in the 85th minute, adding a goal to his earlier assist and putting the result beyond doubt.

The victory moved Excelsior on to nine points from four games and provisionally into fourth place. For Willem II, the home defeat continued a difficult beginning to the campaign: they have collected a single point from the same number of fixtures and remain among the Eredivisie’s bottom sides.
