Eredivisie champion to receive special gold-lettered shield
The commemorative trophy marks 70 years of professional football and revives a design last presented to Feyenoord.
The Eredivisie champion will lift a special version of the championship shield this season, with gold details added to commemorate 70 years of professional football. The one-off prize will replace the regular design normally presented to the Dutch title winner.
Its lettering has been inlaid with 24-carat gold rather than engraved, while the KNVB emblem in the centre has also been produced in gold. Those touches distinguish the anniversary edition from the standard Eredivisie shield.
This will not be the first championship prize to feature golden accents. A comparable edition was awarded in the 2016/17 season, when Feyenoord won the title under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. According to NU.nl, the intention at that time was for the special shield to return once every ten years.
The new Eredivisie campaign begins on Friday. Promoted SC Cambuur will host Excelsior in the opening fixture, starting the season that will culminate in one club receiving the commemorative trophy.
