Echteld says transfer attention has affected young Smit
The coach believes Smit has found the growing interest difficult at times, although their established relationship has helped them discuss his development openly.

Echteld has acknowledged that the interest surrounding Smit has had an impact on the young player. Speaking on the Rondo talk show, the coach said the attention was also a consequence of Smit performing at a high level so early in his career.
“He has suffered from it,” Echteld told Voetbal International. He did not provide details about the interested parties or indicate that a move was close. The comments therefore offer an insight into how Smit has handled the speculation rather than confirmation of any negotiations or transfer plans.
Echteld already knew Smit from their time together at Jong AZ and described him as a relatively stoic character. Although the player is approachable, the coach said Smit often gives brief answers to end conversations quickly. Echteld occasionally responds by calling him in for a longer discussion about how he is feeling and what is expected from him in both attacking and defensive situations.
The coach believes that established dialogue has helped them manage occasional friction. He recalled one instance when Smit did not look at him after being substituted, but said the issue had been resolved by the following day. The pair joked about it during training and then moved on, an example Echteld used to underline the strength of their working relationship.
