Dutch clubs create breathing room in UEFA coefficient race
Six points from the latest European round have strengthened the Netherlands’ position and increased the gap to 11th place.

Eredivisie clubs collected six points between them in Europe this midweek, adding one full point to the Netherlands’ UEFA coefficient after the total was divided by the country’s six participants. The improvement provides some relief following a disappointing previous campaign and a slow start to the current season.
The Netherlands is ninth in the 2023-28 cycle with 42.895 points. That leaves it more than three points above 11th-placed Czechia, while Turkey sits 10th and Poland 12th. Staying in the top ten is significant because champions from countries below that threshold would ordinarily have to enter Champions League qualifying.
The outlook for the 2022-27 cycle is less positive. The Netherlands is expected to finish eighth, its lowest position since placing 10th in the 2015-20 cycle. That would affect future European access: the 2027 KNVB Cup winner can still enter the Europa League league phase directly, but the 2028 cup winner would have to contest the play-offs.
The next round in three weeks offers another opportunity to build on the recovery. Feyenoord host FC Porto, PSV visit Real Madrid, AZ travel to Sparta Prague, NEC face Stade Rennes, Ajax welcome FC Thun and FC Twente play away to SC Freiburg. Further results could allow the Netherlands to begin looking upward again rather than focusing solely on the countries behind it.
